India vs Pakistan Match Clash Cancelled in World Championship of Legends After Players Withdraw

The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match at the World Championship of Legends (WCL). Which was set to take place on July 20 in Birmingham, has been officially cancelled. The decision comes after multiple Indian cricket legends opted out of the game due to rising geopolitical tensions and emotional sentiments following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.

🇮🇳 Shikhar Dhawan Leads the Boycott

Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan confirmed his refusal to participate in the match. In a strong public statement, Dhawan said:

“Jo kadam 11 May ko liya tha, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai.”

He also shared an email addressed to WCL organizers, stating clearly that he would not play in any match against Pakistan. Dhawan’s decision was echoed by other prominent Indian players, including Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Yusuf Pathan, who also declined to participate in the fixture.

 Organizers Cancel Match, Announce Refunds

Following the withdrawal of top Indian legends, the WCL organizing committee announced that the India vs Pakistan match is officially cancelled. In a statement on their official X (Twitter) handle, organizers confirmed that Sabina Park Stadium will remain closed on July 20, and all ticket holders will be fully refunded.

Controversy & Debate

The match cancellation has reignited the age-old debate over whether politics and sports should be kept separate. The WCL organizers had previously justified scheduling the match by pointing to other recent India-Pakistan sporting events in volleyball and hockey.

However, with rising public sentiment against the idea of playing against Pakistan so soon after a national tragedy, the organizers were forced to reconsider. They also acknowledged that their intentions may have unintentionally caused emotional distress.

What’s Next for the WCL?

Although the India vs Pakistan group-stage match has been cancelled, the WCL tournament will continue with the remaining scheduled games. If India and Pakistan happen to meet again in the semi-final or final, organizers say they will evaluate the situation carefully at that time.

There is growing speculation that India may continue to boycott matches against Pakistan in the tournament, depending on public sentiment and future developments.
