Mitchell Starc Eyes BBL Return After 11 Years With Sydney Sixers

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is gearing up for a return to the Big Bash League (BBL) after an absence of 11 years. He has committed to playing for the Sydney Sixers in the 2025–26 season, but only as a supplementary player this time.

Break from BBL and new role

Starc last played a full season with the Sixers in 2014—the inaugural BBL season—where he took part in the final and helped them win. Over the years, he rarely featured in BBL, focusing on international cricket and other T20 leagues. Now, after officially stepping back from regular T20I duty, he sees a window to contribute to the Sixers.

Because of his national commitments, Starc will occupy a supplementary slot. Each BBL team gets two supplementary slots for players who have limited availability but can strengthen the squad without occupying a main position.

Motivations and expectations

Starc said he is excited to don the Sixers’ magenta jersey again. He maintained a close bond with the club and believes he can deliver in bursts. The Sixers’ management also expressed enthusiasm, noting his leadership, experience with both new and old ball, and capacity to mentor younger bowlers.

While he likely won’t play every game, his presence is poised to offer tactical flexibility. When matchups require experience or particular match conditions, Starc could be call upon to make an impact.

As the Ashes ends on January 8, 2026, Starc’s availability increases toward the back half of the BBL season which runs from December 14 to late Janua

ry. That window could give the Sixers a powerful boost when they need to push for finals.
