MS Dhoni IPL 2027: Ex-CSK Star Predicts Mentor and Batting Coach Role
Could MS Dhoni’s days as a Chennai Super Kings player be coming to an end? A fresh prediction from former CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath has sparked discussion among fans, with the ex-cricketer suggesting that Dhoni could take up the roles of mentor and batting coach ahead of IPL 2027.
Dhoni’s future has remained a major talking point after he missed the entire IPL 2026 season. While the former CSK captain has not announced his retirement, Badrinath believes the franchise may already be preparing for a different role for its most iconic figure.

Why Badrinath Believes Dhoni Could Become CSK’s Batting Coach
Badrinath pointed to CSK’s recent coaching appointments as a possible clue.
The franchise has brought in Zaheer Khan as head coach, with Mohit Sharma, Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty also joining the coaching setup. However, CSK have not named a dedicated batting coach for the upcoming season.
Badrinath believes that decision could be connected to Dhoni’s future role. In his view, the former captain may take responsibility for guiding the team’s batters while continuing to influence the dressing room as a mentor.
His prediction has attracted attention because Dhoni has spent nearly two decades shaping CSK’s identity, both as a player and as a leader.
MS Dhoni’s IPL 2027 Future Remains Uncertain
Despite Badrinath’s comments, there is no official confirmation that Dhoni will retire as a player or move into the coaching staff.
CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan previously stated that Dhoni remained available as a player following Zaheer Khan’s appointment. That statement means the franchise has not publicly closed the door on Dhoni continuing on the field.
Dhoni’s absence from IPL 2026 has naturally increased speculation. However, a potential coaching role remains a prediction from Badrinath rather than an announced decision.

A Major Transition for Chennai Super Kings
If Dhoni eventually moves into a mentor and batting coach role, it would mark a significant moment for CSK.
The franchise would need to plan for the future while retaining the experience and leadership that Dhoni has provided for years. His understanding of match situations, pressure moments and the team’s culture could continue to benefit the squad even if he no longer plays.
At the same time, CSK would need to identify their future wicketkeeping and batting options if Dhoni steps away from the playing XI.
The coming months could provide more clarity as the franchise finalises its plans for IPL 2027.
Fans Wait for Dhoni’s Decision
For CSK supporters, the possibility of Dhoni moving away from playing duties is an emotional one. His association with the franchise has become one of the defining stories of the IPL.
However, Badrinath’s prediction should not be mistaken for an official announcement. Dhoni’s own decision will ultimately determine whether he returns as a player or takes on a new responsibility with the franchise.
Until then, the question remains: Will fans see MS Dhoni on the field in IPL 2027, or will he guide CSK from the dugout?
