Anurag Kashyap Explains Why He May Not Direct Virat Kohli Biopic
Patna, September 20, 2025: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has spoken about the idea of directing a biopic on Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli, and his response might disappoint fans. During a recent interview, Kashyap admitted that he does not see himself taking on such a project anytime soon.
Why Kashyap isn’t keen on a Kohli biopic
Kashyap said he respects Kohli’s journey but believes a biopic about the cricketer may not offer the dramatic depth he looks for in stories. “Virat is already a hero for millions. If I have to do a biopic, I want a subject that is more difficult and layered,” Kashyap explained.
According to him, stories that challenge norms or reflect real struggles are more aligned with his filmmaking style. While Kohli’s rise is extraordinary, Kashyap feels it is also well-known and celebrated, leaving little scope for surprise.
Kashyap’s respect for Kohli
Even though he is reluctant to direct the film, Kashyap praised Kohli for being authentic and emotional both on and off the field. He revealed that he knows the cricketer personally and admires his commitment and energy. Kashyap highlighted that Kohli’s influence already inspires countless youngsters without the need for cinematic retelling.
Current projects and wider context
The director is currently promoting his upcoming film Nishaanchi, set to release on 19 September 2025. He also reflected on praise he received from Shah Rukh Khan for earlier projects like Sacred Games and AK vs AK. Additionally, Kashyap commended Alia Bhatt for breaking stereotypes in Bollywood, particularly after her marriage and maternity.

What’s next for a Kohli biopic?
Kashyap’s comments suggest fans may have to look to other filmmakers for a Virat Kohli biopic. While he did not completely rule it out, his preference for complex, unconventional subjects makes such a project unlikely under his direction.
