India vs Sri Lanka: Why Did Both Teams Skip the Quarter-Finals?
The unusual semi-final lineup was created by persistent rain in Nisshin.
India were scheduled to play Afghanistan in the quarter-final. However, the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Since India entered the tournament as a higher-seeded team, the defending champions progressed to the semi-finals.
Sri Lanka faced a similar situation.
Their quarter-final against Nepal was also washed out because of rain. Sri Lanka therefore advanced based on its higher seeding.
In fact, all four men’s cricket quarter-finals were abandoned during the tournament. The ICC confirmed that India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh moved into the semi-finals as the higher-seeded teams.
India vs Sri Lanka Semi-Final: India’s Campaign
India are defending the men’s cricket gold medal they won at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023.
The Indian team is being led by Shreyas Iyer in the 2026 competition. The squad includes several familiar T20 names, including Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.
With the quarter-final washed out, this semi-final will be India’s first opportunity to play a competitive match in the men’s cricket event.
India vs Sri Lanka: Semi-Final Schedule
The other men’s semi-final will be played earlier on the same day.
| Semi-Final | Date | India Time |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistan vs Bangladesh | October 1 | 5:30 AM IST |
| India vs Sri Lanka | October 1 | 10:00 AM IST |
Pakistan will meet Bangladesh in the first semi-final before India take on Sri Lanka.
The winners of both semi-finals will meet in the gold medal match on October 3.
Rain Could Still Be a Talking Point
Weather has already played a major role in the men’s cricket competition.
Four quarter-finals were abandoned, meaning none of those matches produced an on-field result. Therefore, conditions at Korogi Sports Park will remain an important factor for the semi-final.
The organisers will be hoping for uninterrupted play when India and Sri Lanka take the field.
